Dehydration Q&A

What causes dehydration?

When you’re dehydrated, your body’s fluid levels are low. Dehydration may occur as a result of fluid loss through diarrhea or vomiting. It can also be due to excessive sweating or overly exerting yourself.

Other causes of dehydration might include having an illness such as a high fever or flu, intense exercise, or excessive drinking.

What are the symptoms of dehydration?

If you don’t have enough fluids in your body, you may experience dehydration symptoms like:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Dry, wrinkly skin
  • Dry mouth and eyes
  • Infrequent urination and dark-colored urine
  • Extreme thirst

Sleep disturbances might also cause dehydration.

How is dehydration treated?

Dehydration is often treated with IV hydration therapy. This type of therapy focuses on delivering fluids directly into your veins to effectively rehydrate your body. The fluids contain water and electrolytes to restore your body to balance.

This method may be a better approach than drinking plenty of fluids because your body can’t absorb the liquids right away. Your blood sodium levels can drop low, causing your kidneys to have more difficulty eliminating the water.

How does IV hydration therapy work?

IV hydration therapy ensures you get the proper balance of electrolytes along with fluids. When your fluid levels are out of balance, electrolytes — like magnesium, potassium, and sodium — are also depleted.

While you sit in a comfortable chair, your provider places a thin tube into a vein in your arm. The IV solution enters your bloodstream as you relax for 45 minutes. You can read a book or enjoy entertainment on your phone while waiting.

You may feel a cold sensation as the fluids enter your vein, but it shouldn’t be painful. After treatment, the sensation fades quickly and you can return to your normal activities.

Many people feel much better after IV hydration therapy, so it may be an excellent treatment option if you’re struggling through an illness or injury that causes dehydration. If you’re still experiencing any dehydration-related symptoms, you may need another IV hydration therapy session or other treatments.
